WHAT ARE EVPS ??

Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) refers to the alleged communication by spirits through voice recorders. One of the original pioneers in this field, Sarah Estep, claims that in the 1970s she started picking up random voices on her husband's Teac reel-to-reel recorder. She quickly realized that she had picked up spirits speaking that, oftentimes, the human ear is not sensitive enough to hear. This was a significant breakthrough in getting closer to being able to prove spirits exist and that there is life after death.

The whole concept of EVP revolves around the theory that spirits are composed of electromagnetic energy and tape and digital voice recorders use electromagnetic means to record sound. Although digital voice recorders have become the device of choice, you really don't need sophisticated gear to capture EVPs. A simple portable, battery operated tape recorder will do. Battery operated because an electrical cord can  produce static. An external microphone will prevent the recorder from picking up its own noise and will provide clear recordings.

EVPs can be captured in several different ways. As a ghost hunter, your best bet in getting results is by putting the recorder in a specific place that has had some paranormal activity. Leave it running for a couple hours. You don't need to be present, unless you want to ask the spirit questions and perhaps get some direct answers.  You can also leave it running while you walk around investigating.

After you are done with the investigation, listening to the playback is best done with headphones. Spirit sounds and voices are often very faint and difficult to distinguish from ambient sound. With most digital and tape recorders these days, you can upload your voice files to your computer. And edit, filter and refine the recordings with special audio editing software. It can be boring work listening to hours of recordings. But patience and focus is the key to finding EVPs.

The trick in producing credible EVP work is to try your best to disprove your findings by analyzing what source besides a spirit could have produced the sounds. And remember, credibility is everything. It is very easy to publicly proclaim certain unknown sounds as EVPs. If after your whole team cannot logically explain the sounds, you might have something real.

Being able to distinguish paranormal sounds from all of the other sounds on the recordings takes time to learn and time to master. But it is well worth the effort. Finding compelling and genuine EVPs is an enormous thrill knowing you just heard communication from the other side of human life.
